Ella the Elephant by Petra H Bietsch - pdf download only

Petra Bietsch, a retired knitting teacher, has been wonderfully kind in giving us her permission to distribute her patterns for free. They are absolutely delightful, knitted up in DK or worsted weight yarns. Ella the Elephant, is just delightful, with excellent instructions that guide you through the whole process with ease. We hope you love them as much as we do. This pattern is available in store as well, for free.

Here are her notes on the pattern:

Ella the Elephant (Blinky Bear’s cousin) is a fun project to make because it is knit in one piece using the Magic Loop Method. Ella has no loose parts which makes this a safe gift for all ages!

Finished size is approximately 18” tall.

This pattern is written with clear instructions for each individual round/row to be worked including checkboxes so you will always know where you are in the pattern.

Experience: Intermediate/advanced Level.

The last pages of the pattern contain all the tutorials for the following techniques used in this pattern:

• Working in the round with Magic Loop Method
• Emily Ocker pin hole Cast On
• Provisional Cast On
• German Short rows in Garter stitch and Stockinette stitch
• Directional increases and decreases
• Picking up stitches along knitted edge and from purl bumps
• Duplicate stitch finishing
• I-cord

Additional Supplies needed:

• 2 yds. of black yarn of same weight for eye embroidery
• 2 yds. of contrasting color waste yarn
• 4 yds. of bright colored same weight yarn for toenail embroidery
• 6 yds. for scarf
• Soft poly-fil for stuffing- we highly recommend Silky Soft brand or any other brand of poly-fil that will allow you to shape the forms needed for the face (not just fill up the empty space).
• Blunt tipped darning needle for Kitchener stitch grafting and placing sts on waste yarn. (Metal, not plastic)
• Chenille needle with large enough eye to accommodate worsted weight yarn. (sharp tipped)
• 2 Sharp, straight tipped Doll needles for eye embroidery. (Metal, not plastic)
• Crochet hook size F (4mm) for the Emily Ocker cast on.

Note: Knitting Needles recommended are US 7/4.5mm 40 – 60” circular however please use the size needed to obtain a dense fabric that will not show the stuffing.

This pattern can be used in any weight yarn by adjusting the knitting needle size. No other adjustments to the pattern are needed.
